Common Mistakes People Make When Renovating Their Home.jpg

Renovating a home can get very tough. Your mind may be flooded with ideas for your new home design, but where do you even start? Should you hire a contractor? How much is it going to cost? It can be an intimidating process and it’s very easy for someone with less experience to make tricky and costly mistakes. Hiring a general contractor will put you at ease as they have the experience and eye for design needed to help you get the look you want for your home. To help you avoid some basic errors that could prove to be costly, Frazer Building Company has put together a list of the most common mistakes people make when renovating their home.

1. Not asking enough questions
Some consumers get wrapped up in the excitement of their upcoming project and forget about the details. The last thing you want to do is get knee-deep into a renovation with questions or concerns that are too late to change without a cost attached to it. Before you agree to scope and price, ask a lot of questions. It’s your money you’re spending. You should know why and on what.

2. Trying to be your own general contractor
The idea of saving money by going the DIY route sounds great. However, some things are best left to the professionals. Besides the experience with construction, materials and resources, general contractors have accountability with subcontractors. A subcontractor can suffer dearly if the job isn’t completed on time and budget. Subcontractors will generally give a general contractor precedence over a single project customer. This is why it is better to hire a general contractor with experience and contacts. Being your own general contractor works out on smaller, less detailed projects, but know that this is a risk.

3. Falling for deceptive advertising
Many consumers will buy into the whole BOGO market (buy one, get one free), free install labor and creative financing options such as 0% interest. Unfortunately, we all get wrapped up in the bold print and forget about the fine print below. It’s super important to get all the details and ask questions. Getting a few quotes from other contractors is the best way to compare apples to apples. Many times you’ll see it’s not as good of a deal after you have all the information to make an informed decision.

4. Skimping on quality products
Just because it’s a good deal doesn’t mean it’s a good product. Spend the money on anything and everything you will be touching daily. Door hardware, sink faucets and kitchen cabinets are some very good examples. You’ll be much happier when you have a daily reminder of the quality of your home.
